BLOG TOUR: The Immortal Circus by A. R. Kahler

We are so incredibly ecstatic to present our stop on the Immortal Circus blog tour. If you haven't heard about the book--- and where have you been hiding, Immortal Circus by Alex Kahler is unique and innovative series known as an eSerial, where episodes are released periodically rather than releasing the entire book at once. It's a pretty cool idea, especially for those of us with a TON of reading each week. You can read at your leisure. No pressure to finish a big book in a X number of days. You actually anxiously await your next episode, checking your inbox for your notice that it's been downloaded. So that's how this started and it's really taken off.
So today, we've got an excellent post from Alex that will give you an idea of what this wild ride has been like for him. It's certainly been a lot of fun for us as readers.
And without further ado, we give you, Alex Kahler...

What I Didn't Expect When I Got Published...

This is kind of a cheating topic, I'll admit. Because I didn't really have any expectations of getting published. I'd worked with high name authors and those struggling to get their books recognized; I've seen both ends of the spectrum. I hoped I'd place somewhere in between. I knew that getting published wouldn't really change much in my daily life—I'd still wake up and write and train and spend time with friends. I'd still drink too much coffee and think I should practice handstands more. In other words, I didn't really know what would change in my life. But I hoped that something would.

Getting published for me was strange. So many authors have really long run-ups to their debuts. They have years to plan and promote (and anticipate and panic, as we authors do, because our books are our babies). They have big book signings and events on the release date. Me? My debut was a little different. As you probably know, it was first released as an eSerial, meaning it was released in bi-weekly chunks over a month and a half, much like a TV series. And it was released only six weeks after I signed my contract with 47North. So I guess I didn't expect that sort of debut: an immediate yet gradual thing. It was really cool to have my debut be a part of something so unique, but it threw a lot of expectations out the window. Editing was fast and furious, I didn't have ARCs, I didn't get a copy of my book until after it was released, and we didn't focus on getting blurbs or editorial reviews.

That sounds kind of negative, but in reality, it turned out really great. Because we focused on getting the book into the hands of readers ASAP. Having such a gradual release meant it gave us a lot of time to get people hooked and talking about it. And they did. It's like we sidestepped all the work most publishers go through and just said, here, take this book, it's awesome and you're going to love it. I got to chat with readers about what they thought would happen next while it was happening. It was really cool.

I guess the best analogy I'd have is jumping into a pool of cold water or slowly inching in and getting acclimated. Most writers just jump into being an author with a big launch party, and I think it's a shock to the system. I got to ease in, so by the time my book was a physical thing, there was already a readership who really supported what I'd done. I was already getting the feedback most authors have to wait months for. And it felt more like a communal thing, being excited about the upcoming episodes along with the readers. It was a shared experience.

Definitely not the norm. But then again, very little in my life is normal.
On that note, I should go do some handstands....

Murdered contortionists aren’t exactly what Vivienne signed up for when she ran away to join the circus. But like most things under the big top, nothing is what it seems. With a past she can't quite remember, Vivienne finds that running away forever might not be as appealing as it once sounded—especially not when she realizes the devilishly attractive ringleader Mab is the Faerie Queen of legend…and that she and the rest of the troupe are locked in an age-old rivalry between the otherworldly Courts.Aided by her friends Kingston—a feisty stage magician whose magic is quickly stealing her heart—and his smart-ass assistant Melody, Vivienne finds herself racing against the clock to discover the culprit behind a series of deaths that should be impossible. However, the answer she seeks might reveal more about her own bloody past—and future—than she bargains for.
The show's just beginning.

Step right up…

Most little boys dream of running away to join the circus.
Alex didn't just dream it: he did it. But then, he rarely lets a good dream pass him by.
In the past six years he's toured and trained across America and Europe. He's performed in Amsterdam, taught trapeze in Madrid, studied in Glasgow and even had a stint as assistant to Holly Black and Cassandra Clare in New England. He's constantly on the lookout for new places to explore and new worlds to invent. He's a Sagittarius fueled by full moons and espresso. The way to his heart is a latte and fan art. Just for the record.
THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS is his first New Adult novel, and is being released exclusively through the Amazon Kindle e-Serials program by 47North. It will be available in print and audio when the episodes are complete.
MARTYR the first book in his post-apocalyptic fantasy, will be published by Spencer Hill Press in October 2014.
