Violet Midnight by Lynn Rush

Let the Hunt begin…

Blending in with her college co-eds proves difficult for vampire Hunter, Emma Martin, considering the mystical tattoo on her wrist glows whenever Vamps are near. And after three months of silence, the glow is back with a vengeance.

Jake Cunningham witnesses Emma, a violet-eyed beauty, using unimaginable powers to fight off a fanged creature. Finally, after two years of searching, he may have found out what he’s become—
a Hunter, like Emma.

Thankful for an ally in the fight against the Vamps, Emma finds hope and comfort in Jake’s arms. As she learns more about her new love’s family and its dark heritage, she may be forced not only to hunt them but to sacrifice her life to save Jake’s soul.

About the Author...
Lynn Rush
“When I started out on this writing journey, it felt like such a far away dream. I constantly asked myself, ‘Really? Me? A writer?’ Then when I was published I still asked, ‘Really? Me? An author?’ Along the way things inspired me, obstacles shot up, and doors both opened and closed…but through my faith, family, and friends, I found motivation to continue on my dream - dreams of something bigger than all of us. Whether it’s writing, music, dancing …” ~Lynn Rush

Shelley's Review of Violet Midnight
**We were given an advanced copy of Violet Midnight from the publicist for an honest review.**
I want to start off by saying, Lynn donates a good portion of her proceeds for Violet Midnight, and all of her books, to cancer research. I've known many people who have had to deal with this disease, in it's many forms, and the last two years it hit home for me. Most recently with my Mom (my rock, my everything), fighting with stage 4 lung cancer. Thank God she is a fighter and we've had excellent results with her treatment and recovery. At this time, her biopsies are being used to further research this type of cancer. Lynn has had to deal with leukemia. I've seen what this cancer can do as well. Much focus is put on breast cancer research, and while this is of course important, it's also important to realize cancer touches us in many more dangerous forms. We don't hear enough about them and they do not receive the funding that breast cancer research does. So, my plea, is donate where you can, educate yourself and take care of your bodies. Get your check ups- don't take anything for granted-it may save your life or that of a loved one.

That said, let's move on to the light (?) stuff...
Violet Midnight was a fun-if by fun, I mean; fast paced, dark, full of vamp ass kicking action, laced with a sweet, tender yet intense romance. Why yes, that's exactly what I mean.
Lynn's take on vampire lore is very different, and her vamp hunter is totally unique and a thrill to follow.
She wastes no time introducing us to Emma's crazy world of vamp killing- in the middle of receiving her college education no less. I can't say much more than that without spoilering. Darn it all...because the way this story takes off is exciting, heart pounding and so different, I want to spill it all.
I immediately loved Emma. She is of course; strong, smart and extremely snarky. Much of what she says goes over her best friend/roommate's head, but we as insiders get to see exactly where she's coming from and what she really wants to say.
She has awesome abilities- her coolest being what alerts her to the vamps in the first place. And weapons I'd love to get my hands on... you know, just in case I ever need to kick some vampire butt myself. It could happen.
What she does with these tools is cool too. She's definitely a force to be reckoned with.
And then...enter Jake. Oh Jake! I love love love him. Hot, smart, attentive and ready to fight along Emma's side. Right away he's thrown in to Emma's secret vampire hunting world and we find he has some secrets of his own.
These two make a great team. What they discover and accomplish together makes for not only an exciting- and scary journey, but some seriously hot foreplay. Yep, I said it. They're pretty hot together. And given Emma's reserves- her capacity to keep people at arms length in order to protect them and save herself from the hurt of losing them, opens a serious floodgate of pent up need and emotions.
There are plenty of surprises for both Emma and Jake. Unbelievable twists and turns...despite their strength, you wonder at times how they could ever win the big battle. They're up against unseen enemies, betrayals and vampire mojo. It seems the odds might be against them, but they never truly give up.
There are other surprises. Ones I can't elude to without giving away part of the story, but a character from Emma's past is one of my favorite side characters. And I have to say,  the big bad guys are quite enthralling- literally. Their story puts a new spin on vampire lore...and new meaning to family sticking together. You'll see what I'm talking about.
I was totally engaged and invested in Emma and Jake's story. It was intriguing and full of mystery. Their chemistry was undeniable. But, there were spots that felt a bit repetitive near the end. The couple had a few lines in their private moments that were giving me a case of deja vu. I don't know if it was meant to show Emma's inexperience in relationships (and Jake's for that matter), or if Rush just didn't realize she'd already expressed those exact emotions and dialogue in a previous scene. But, over all I loved her creativity, her world building, and all of her characters. Good, bad and ugly...and there's plenty of ugly.
We're left with a small cliffhanger (aha!), so I am of course, curious to see where she takes us next. After all, this is a big, big world and you just know there are vampires out there lurking, waiting to take over...and waiting to eliminate their greatest threat.
I recommend Violet Midnight to anyone that enjoys Buffy style heroines, sweet romance and a new look at vampire mythology. A solid paranormal romance with great promise for the sequel.
