Ten Tiny Breaths by K. A. Tucker

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons.

She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit.

Kathleen currently resides in a quaint small town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.

Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! That was my first thought as I came to the end of this
gripping tale that had me from the moment I started it...
I already love KA Tucker from her Causal Enchantment series, so I knew her writing style and technique would capture me quickly; drawing me in to each character, enchanting me with their lives.
Ten Tiny Breaths revolves around a young woman named Kacey. We are thrust in to her world with her trying to understand her mother saying... "ten tiny breaths...seize them, feel them, love them" What does this mean? How does this apply to her life?
Oh, we discover so much about her; her past shaping her in to the woman she is and stifling any growth to who she should be.
With her sister Livie by her side, they decide to make a run to Miami and start a life where no one knows their past. Day by day we see glimpses in to the depth of Kacey's problems. These problems are a focus throughout the book and they come to a head with the mysterious and intriguing neighbor, Trent. Upon their first meeting, the sparks fly and with each chance meeting thereafter, we see a budding relationship for these two characters.
But, that is not all this book is about. KA Tucker being the gifted and brilliant writer that she is gets you to emotionally connect with Kacey. So, when all hell breaks loose, you are so deeply involved that all you can do is batten down the hatches and hold on for your dear life. It is so explosive that when you finally make it to the end, you take the deep breath that you have been holding and sit back soaking it all in.
I started TTB on a week night and with having to work the next day, I didn't get to finish in one sitting. It killed me having to put it down. And throughout the workday, all I could think about was TTB. It consumed my thoughts. That is just how invested you are with this book.
When I finally got to get my hands back on it and finish.... I was blown away... KA's New Adult contemporary book is pure genius!! The talent of this author shines through the superb story found within these pages of Ten Tiny Breaths. This is definitely a book you do not want to miss out on!!

Ten Tiny Breaths is unconventional, thrilling, funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming. I felt every emotion possible. Every. Emotion. And not once or twice, but throughout the entire story.
Kacey, our heroine is truly troubled and passionate. Hanging on by a thread. Trying to keep it together for her ever sweet teen sis, Olivia (Livey). She immediately pulled my heartstrings, and I willingly followed her through her own private hell.
I don't want to get into any details and give anything away. But I do want to tell you how much I loved several of the characters that invade  the lives of these two sisters still struggling to cope with the loss of their parents, and Kacey's dearest friends.
These very special people quickly attach themselves to the girls (much to Kacey's horror and chagrin).
And Kacey aka Kace can't deny, for Livey's sake, that this is a good thing. Well, we think... we'll see.
All complicated, and very much their own unique individuals, they each play an important role in this tale of loss, love and forgiveness.
So who are they? First is Mia, and adorable and somewhat precocious  five year old. You can't help but fall for her. Her mother, Storm. Not your typical single mom, she's sweet, caring and generous. But my favorite, most surprising and complex character was Trent. YOU. WILL. DROOL. AND. CRY. And drool and cry. And DROOL and cry over this guy. I'm telling you now.
There are other players in the drama. All well written. Some pivotal, some just part of the day-to-day. All integral and necessary to making this a fully dimensional world. No flat side characters here.
As I said this story is unconventional- and exciting. With twists and turns that will leave you bewildered, elated, shocked, AROUSED and at times unsettled, Ten Tiny Breaths takes you on a emotional ride. It certainly kept me guessing and glued to the page.
I thoroughly enjoyed the friendships, the drama and THE ROMANCE.
At under 300 pages, it's a quick read for most, especially since you won't want to put it down until the very end. Sure to be ranked among the best of the  New Adult Contemporary releases for 2012. I recommend it for all New Adult Contemporary Romance fans- and those looking for a good place to dip their toes into the ever popular genre.
