Kat and Shell

Hi Kathryn and Shelley! I have to admit, it was kind of hard to pick my top five favorite books to talk about today, but I think I’ve narrowed them down here for you. Um, I get that technically I picked eleven books, but that’s okay, right? Since seven of them are part of a series and picking one would be like picking your favorite kid? Or twin? Wait—don’t answer that.

  1. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. This book really speaks to me. It’s all about one guy’s journey toward enlightenment.

But out of all secrets of the river, he today only saw one, this one touched his soul. He saw: this water ran and ran, incessantly it ran, and was nevertheless always there, was always at all times the same and yet new in every moment! Great be he who would grasp this, understand this!

  1. About a Boy by Nick Hornby. My Uncle Joey swore by Nick Hornby books. He and I would sometimes talk about them when we were waiting for the right sets to come in.

He loved Nirvana, but at his age they were kind of a guilty pleasure. All that rage and pain and self-hatred! Will got a bit . . . fed up sometimes, but he couldn't pretend it was anything stronger than that. So now he used loud angry rock music as a replacement for real feelings, rather than as an expression of them, and he didn't even mind very much. What good were real feelings anyway?

  1. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Another Hornby book that I really dig.

People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands—literally thousands—of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss.

  1. The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. Yes, I’ve read all the Harry Potter books. Yes, I absolutely loved them. No, I won’t apologize for that.

Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.

  1. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This is one of those books that, when you read it, it sort of leaves you quiet afterwards while you process it. And then you want to talk to all your friends (who actually read) about it.

I didn't know what to say to her. What do you say to people when they ask how it feels to lose everything? When every planet in your solar system has exploded?

There are always two sides to every story . . .

His whole life, Jonah Whitecomb has strove to meet everyone’s expectations of him: the perfect student, dutiful son, loyal twin, accomplished surfer, and powerful Magical. But behind his carefully composed façade hides the truth of how his family has fallen apart, leaving Jonah more often than not feeling adrift. To complicate matters, he fell in love long ago with a girl in his dreams, one he’s never told anyone about, including his twin brother.

Just when life seems its bleakest, Jonah discovers that Chloe is real. Wanting to finally reach out and grab happiness for himself, he embarks on a journey to track down the girl of his dreams, only to find that happy endings aren’t always guaranteed, the best laid out plans can go horribly awry, and sometimes, you have to simply let yourself go along for the ride.

* Beyond Fate is Jonah’s point-of-view of the events of A Matter of Fate, and is a companion novella.

Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.

I was soooo excited to be able to read Jonah's POV in Beyond Fate.  When I started this series and read A Matter of Fate I really didn't know if I could take all the angst that Heather Lyons puts her characters through.  Of course, I dove right in to book 2, A Matter of Heart, and again...*sighs*....completely torn up...
But through everything...and this is HUGE, because LOTS happen in these books, I have loved Jonah.
So, I rubbed my hands together, getting myself ready to be in his head for Beyond Fate and I was completely captivated all the way through.
I know that it begins from the beginning, things we already knew from book one, but when you experience from Jonah's POV, yeah....it hits you right in the gut...We get to see everything he went through...Feel all the excitement, joy, and pain that he endured...*sighs*
I definitely understand a few things that since book one was completely writing in Chloe's POV, that I had wondered.  The relationship between Jonah and Kellan was something I really wanted to see more of and I really got to see how their relationship was before Chloe to after meeting her.
I can't wait for A Matter of Truth and of course, I am very eager to read Kellan's POV.  I know that may be weird being that I am a #TeamJonah chick...But, I do want to know what is going on in his head.  I will be nice to see what he was thinking...
The Fate series is a FANTASTIC series and one that I think you should pick up today!!
