GUARDIAN by Courtney Cole Excerpt Hop

Guardian

Barnes and Noble *Amazon** iBooks**Kobo

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane.  I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy.
I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there.
Until one day, there was.
Our world isn’t what we think.  There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things.
Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are.
They’re very real, and they’re terrifying.
I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t.  I don’t know what to think anymore.  I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true.
There’s only one thing I know for sure.
Nothing is what it seems.

It’s the most I feel comfortable telling her, without feeling utterly disloyal to my mother.  I’m not going to explain that mom will sometimes go days without speaking to us, because if she sleeps, she sleeps during the day like a vampire.  I’m not going to tell my grandmother that I’d woken up last night to find mom standing in my bedroom doorway with the strangest expression on her face, like she was angry, and that she had turned and walked wordlessly away when she noticed that I was looking at her.
No, Grandma doesn’t need to know that.  I wouldn’t be able to put the troublesome part into words anyway- the ferocious expression that had been on her face.
It was like she was furious.
At me.
Grandma Ava is instantly concerned, but to my relief, she respects my opinion that Ellie and I don’t need to be taken care of.  After she makes sure that we’re getting enough to eat, her initial reaction is that it’s only been a couple of months, a handful of weeks, really.
Her familiar, strong voice soothes me through the phone.
“Whitney, your mom is a strong woman.  All of the women in our family are!  But we’re passionate- about life and everything in it.  Because of that, we tend to feel emotions very strongly.” She states this proudly, like a badge of honor.

HeadshotABOUT COURTNEY COLE: Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people. Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
