BLOG TOUR: Embracing the Flames by Candace Knoebel

Hi everyone! Welcome to our stop on the Embracing the Flames blog tour!!
We are excited to bring you this book and series and hope you enjoy our reviews...PLUS...make sure you enter the GIVEAWAY!!!
The Stone of Immortality has always been kept under the watch of the Draconta. That is, until the betrayal of a Fate. Now everything is about to change.
Aurora Megalos accepted her destiny without blinking-even if it meant succumbing to her dragon side. Deemed the Progeny, she left the ordinary life she knew and has done everything in her power to learn the ways of her new realm and what it means to be part dragon. But when her mentor, Astral, suddenly disappears, she is forced to take the reins.
With war on the brink, she sets out on an epic journey to not only find her mentor, but to stop her Arch Enemy, Zordon, from obtaining the Stone of Immortality. But what she discovers about him along the way is far worse than she could’ve ever imagined. She will be tested and pushed to the limit. Lives will be lost, love will be questioned, and a battle will begin.

Candace Knoebel had dreamed of being a dancer ever since she could remember. With a love of all things art, she saw herself moving to New York and pursuing her passion as an artist. But all that changed on October 10th, 2002 when she met the love of her life. Her dreams diverged and after marrying her high school sweetheart and having two beautiful children, she realized she missed her creative side.
Growing up alongside the Harry Potter series, Candace found herself missing the epicosity of a story that pulls you in and won’t let you go. In 2009, she began dreaming up characters that would mold her first novel. Through lunch breaks and late nights, after putting her kids to bed, she built a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. She found her calling in life and knew this was more than dancing could’ve ever meant to her.
Once complete in 2010, she began the grueling process of finding a publisher. With relentless determination, she was finally able to realize her dream in December of 2011 when 48fourteen offered her a publishing contract. With a HUGE yes and a happy dance, she continues her Trilogy.
Let me start off by saying I absolutely LOVED BORN in FLAMES. Candace's world building was fantastic. She detailed just enough for you to create your own image of both Aurora's human and magical worlds. And we jumped right into them. The characters were quite likeable. Fenn was loyal and charming, even swoon-worthy. Aurora, discovering who and what she really was, endured drastic changes, met many challenges, and grew all along her journey. I was pretty captivated and intrigued throughout the book. But the second book started out much slower. Much, much slower. And though EMBRACING the FLAMES picked up right where BORN in FLAMES left off, I lost my connection to Aurora and it took me a very long time to get it back.
So was EtH a disappointment? Oh, no. Definitely not. It was actually LOADED with action, suspense and mystery- and a touch of romance. I found it very enjoyable once I got past Aurora's confusion and the circles Astral, the Council, the  Fates and Zordon had us running around in. It was indeed complicated and slow, but there was so much to cover. So much speculation. And deceit. And rewriting of history. The lengths Aurora had to go to in order to make any progress were painstaking and often treacherous. Not only is Aurora tasked with fulfilling the prophecy- stopping Zordon, protecting the Stone of Immortality- and thus preventing an all out war, she has to deal with discovering the rest of her family's history, Fenn's heritage and the many mysteries of the realms... and preserving it all. It's just a bit overwhelming. And pretty fascinating. So, along with Aurora, I, heart in my throat, proceeded.
Aurora makes a lot of mistakes- many because of rash and emotional decisions. She faces deception, manipulation and betrayal at the hands of her enemies and those she thought she could trust. She has choices to make (quickly) that can change the course of the future. She's being influenced and pushed from all sides. And every decision brings it's own consequences and victims. Intriguing, right?
As I said, the tale begins slowly- honestly for me it dragged for a good portion of the book. Much of that was my annoyance with Aurora and her erratic behavior. At times she drove me batty and had me wanting to throw my kindle. It was tiring and frustrating. But as I continued, the story built- and built- and built. The tension and anxiety mounted with each action. The stakes constantly and instantly raised higher. Each discovery brought about a new challenge. And a new threat. The distress was palpable. The outlook discouraging... And still our heroes never give up or give in. Aurora and Fenn vowed fight to the end for what they believe in and those they love. And for that loyalty and tenacity I also vowed to persevere and see their story through. And I was well rewarded.
What's amazing is the short period of time this all takes place in. The amount of treachery and scheming. The destruction and fatalities. The heartbreak, pain and strife. When you stop and reflect on all of that for a moment, you realize how much Aurora and Fenn have indeed grown. How much they've risked and sacrificed for something they're only beginning to understand. How incredibly brave they are. How strong their bond is- together and apart. And in thereby embracing their fortitude and strength, you begin again to see how amazing this world they are so desperate to save really is.

Embracing the Flames will have have you constantly second guessing. Questioning the Fates and destiny. Clutching your chest in heartbreak and disbelief. Shouting at Aurora to see beyond her heart and the moment. Praying that goodness prevails. And gasping, as once again we're left hanging in the balance as Aurora and Fenn's world teeters precariously on it's axis.

I was really excited about getting back to Aurora and Fenn in the the sequel to Born in Flames.  I thoroughly enjoyed book one and knew that book 2 would whisk me away to that magical world filled with sorcery and of course the magical beings of dragons.
So, I am now back in Embracing the Flames and of course it picks up where we left off and we are finding out what Aurora and Fenn have been up to since arriving back in their realm.
With so much riding on Aurora and her being the Progeny, we see struggles within her to accept what has been laid before her.  I like Aurora.  Throughout this book we see her make some difficult decisions and although there are times I could slap her for her hair brain choices, I also felt that she grew so much on this journey.  And she didn't do this all on her own.  Fenn is still by her side and now as her soul mate, the connection for these two keeps getting stronger and stronger.  I loved watching these two come together and get better.  Getting to know Zane was another bonus and I found myself really liking the person he is becoming.
Yet, with all the good things I found, there are some dark and sad moments....I was thrown some surprises within the twists that Candace Knoebel created and as I reached the end of this roller coaster, I knew my mouth was hanging wide open in disbelief.
Filled with lots of action and adventure, I cannot wait for what I will find in book three...

Don't forget to check out Book 1...Born in Flames
Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.
Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out.

In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

BLOG TOUR: Burning by Elana K. Arnold

Welcome to our stop on the BURNING by Elana Arnold blog tour. Brought to you by the lovely ladies of BookNerd Tours; Jean and Amber. I can't thank them enough for grabbing this little beauty and extending to us. And to think I nearly passed it up. What a fatal mistake that would have been.
Suffice to say, I cannot tell you how proud I am that we're able to present to you, our readers, such a phenomenal piece of literature in BURNING. To call it simply another YA Contemporary is like calling Michelangelo simply a painter. This book is truly a work of art. A masterpiece. Think I'm exaggerating? Check it out here for yourself. You'll be singing it's praises as well, as sure as the sun will rise.
Enough of my boasting for now. I have a full review ahead for you after all...
Enjoy the post. And please try to drop by each stop along the tour. As always, the ladies have planned an event full of fun, excitement and prizes.
HAPPY READING~ Shell

Ben: Having just graduated from high school, Ben is set to leave Gypsum, Nevada. It's good timing since the gypsum mine that is the lifeblood of the area is closing, shutting the whole town down with it. Ben is lucky: he's headed to San Diego, where he's got a track scholarship at the University of California. But his best friends, Pete and Hog Boy, don't have college to look forward to, so to make them happy, Ben goes with them to check out the hot chick parked on the side of Highway 447.

Lala: She and her Gypsy family earn money by telling fortunes. Some customers choose Tarot cards; others have their palms read. The thousands of people attending the nearby Burning Man festival spend lots of cash--especially as Lala gives uncanny readings. But lately Lala's been questioning whether there might be more to life than her upcoming arranged marriage. And the day she reads Ben's cards is the day that everything changes for her. . . and for him.

ELANA K. ARNOLD completed her M.A. in Creative Writing/Fiction at the University of California, Davis. She grew up in Southern California, where she was lucky enough to have her own horse--a gorgeous mare named Rainbow--and a family who let her read as many books as she wanted. She lives in Long Beach, California, with her husband, two children, and a menagerie of animals. She is represented by Rubin Pfeffer of the East/West Literary Agency. Sacred is her debut novel.

Devastatingly beautiful. Not a term I've used a lot to describe a book, but BURNING was a painfully beautiful and poignant story. I was completely lost in these characters... With Ben, a typical boy in so many ways, trying to hold onto his childhood, his memories in a small town destined to disappear. His feelings of guilt for finding a way out, but without his family and friends. His troubled relationship with his quirky little brother. Wanting to make a life for himself, but burdened with worry and fear, not wanting to leave those important behind... In Lala's way of life. Her world not far from mine- an hour away, if you were actually able to drive there. And culturally a lifetime apart. Yet she touched me so deeply. Her compassion, her wisdom for one so young, her eloquence, her ability to dream. Both bound by loyalty to family and friends, and expectations. Both them wrought with fear, regret, and desperation. Both uncertain of their future, but brought together in an overwhelming need to know the other. To explore the unknown, to hope and dare to dream for a happy future. Yes, fate had everything to do with their meeting.
BURNING is a perfect coming of age story that doesn't waste time on outrageous antics or scenes meant for shock value. It tells a very real, emotional tale of growing up and moving on. That means something very different to everyone, and Elana does a wonderful job drawing the differences between what Ben and Lala are searching for.
This is probably the shortest review I've ever written. If I say much more, I'll say too much so I'll just continue by telling you how this book made me feel.
For what Elana has given us is a story you must experience all on your own. Never before have I  walked away feeling I knew characters so intimately. While each chapter is scribed in alternating POV's, beginning with Ben, the writing is wonderfully lyrical and yet so profoundly clear. I found myself fully invested in these two very quickly. Both speaking so passionately and honestly. Each having to endure their own brand of pain and suffering. At times it was torture. My heartbreaking. And swelling. My mind exploding. My moods were swinging with each emotional reflection, every event, and personal discovery. I felt the full range of emotions from sadness to elation, anger and disgust, to anxiety and admiration. And LOVE. I laughed, cheered, sneered, mourned, and dreamed right along them. And I cried. UGLY cried. On more than one occasion. I was agitated when I had close the book and step back into my life. I didn't want to leave them for one moment until the very end. And when I returned to their world I felt content. What Ben and Lala experience is magical and life affirming. It was perfection and yet it ended to soon. BURNED is absolutely exquisite from the first words to the last. And by far my favorite book of the year.

How many answers you seek are just a part of you, waiting to be found?

The game has changed.

Fresh from her first brush with mortality, a fragile Sadie Matthau is playing human with Cole Hardwick while the Survivors endure unimaginable tragedy. Wrought with the first deaths of their own kind, a tyrant who will torture them, and an opponent more terrifying than anyone could have foreseen, the Survivors are facing their end.
Told from three points of view, The Survivors: Body & Blood is a bloodcurdling, mind-bending, heart-stopping ride. As Sadie and the Winters uncover more enemies, more history, and more answers, they find themselves brought closer together and ripped further apart. And all the while, a haunting Alexander Raven lurks at the edge of Sadie s lifeline, at the darkening fringes of her mind.
As the Survivors descend into chaos, Sadie realizes a painful truth: the deepest of secrets leave the darkest of marks.
Caught between a terrifying fantasy and her own grim reality, Body & Blood is the story of Sadie s dance with her demons, future, past, and present.

Amanda Havard thinks in stories. She writes books and songs, tells stories to people over coffee or in elaborate iPad apps, in short films or subtle photographs. Stories are her life. THE SURVIVORS: BODY & BLOOD is her third novel, and is an amalgamation of all of her storytelling love combined. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, a place where creativity drips from the sap of the trees, radiates from the attitude of the population, and seeps from the concrete. The inventor of the Immersedition™ interactive book app, Havard is always looking for the next best story-- and the most innovative way to tell it.

Welcome TSK TSKers!!
What a special treat I have for you today.  I have gotten Amanda Havard in the hot seat and was able to ask her some questions so that we all could find out a little more about her...
Intrigued?? I definitely am...
So, lets get started...

TSK TSK:    What type of planning goes in to your writing?  Is there lots of research?

Amanda: "Plan" and "research" are probably the two most central terms to my writing process. SURVIVORS is built on drawing connections between existing mythology and lore, existing history. I can support every historical reference with research and often a primary source document. Research inspires and frames everything I do.

But I also plot obsessively. Readers know me for weaving in subtle and intricate pieces and patterns into my writing that might start as Nothing but build to Something. That's my style. And all I can say is... Just wait for book five.

TSK TSK:  What would be a typical day for you?

Amanda: There is no typical day for me. I have my hand in so many endeavors, it seems like no two days are the same. I run the interactive book app company, Immersedtion, and so I am back and forth between my apartments in New York and Nashville meeting with all kinds of publishers and media companies. I write on planes and in coffee shops and on car rides to meetings. In between all that, I write and produce music for the SURVIVORS world, other authors' story worlds, and my own purposes. And somewhere in between all that, I manage to eat (often cook) a lot of good food, keep active, read comic books, research transmedia, and... shop. (There's always time for style.) So my typical day typically involves some combination of all those pieces, in various fractions.

TSK TSK:   Music is an integral part of your life, do you feel like you have

a constant playlist running in your head?

Amanda: Yes. Big days in my life get playlists. Moods get playlists. Conversations, characters, life events, errands, friends, and ideas get playlists. There is a perfect soundtrack to every moment in your life if only you know how to find it.

TSK TSK:  Do you find it easier to write your books or your songs?

Amanda: Books. You get one shot with songs. They're easier to mess up, in part because they have so few words.

TSK TSK:  What is something that you do that no one knows that you do?

Amanda: Save the world, Batman-style. Oh wait. Scratch that. Probably shouldn't be divulging my secret identities....

TSK TSK:  Where is somewhere you would love to travel to?

Amanda: Asia. I've never been! I've also fixated a lot on the idea of Budapest in the past, and I've wanted to go to Turkey in general ever since I started writing about Ephesus. I also have a good friend from Latvia, and it sounds so lovely that I really want to visit.

TSK TSK:  Who is your favorite character in The Survivors series?  The most

fun to write?  The hardest?

Amanda: Mark. And Mark. And Mark. (Runners up: Ginny; Alexander is sickly fun to write; And sometimes it's hard to watch Sadie be to stay in so much pain.)

TSK TSK:   Anything you can tell us about book 4?

Amanda: It's the only book I've ever written that shocks me. Shocks. So imagine what it will do to you.

The Body & Blood Soundtrack Sessions follow Amanda Havard as she talks about each song found on the soundtrack for the third book in THE SURVIVORS SERIES, Body & Blood, and performs exclusive acoustic versions of each song. Well, let me first say that I was ecstatic to be able to meet Amanda Havard not too long ago while attending UTopYA con in Nashville in June.  She is such a beautiful soul that once you meet her, your life is forever touched.

And now, on to the book...
I read all three books back to back so let me just say this...
The world that Amanda created is innovative and unique.  The way she weaves true historical events and facts in to the fantastical world of The Survivors is purely the work of genius.
I was engrossed in so many aspects of this tale that sometimes I felt like my head was spinning.  And believe me, that is a good thing.  Body & Blood (as well as the other books) is jam packed with suspense, action, angst (yes, lots of it), mystery, a lil passion, and just down right DRAMA!!!
But it is a series that I have latched on to and am dying to find out what happens next...ESPECIALLY since we are left with the MOTHER of all cliffhangers....GRRRR!!!!
ANYWAY...as you can see I really like this series and this is good for you to know since what I say next might throw you off a little bit.  As I am now finished with book 3 of this series, the main character/heroine Sadie has been the one we have followed throughout the books.  It is her story that we are tagging along on and at this moment...I don't like her.  She is selfish and very self-centered.  I have wanted to yank her up by her hair at times and slap her silly.  The decisions she makes just PISSES me off...and yep...ALL THE WAY TO BOOK 3 I feel this way...There are moments I see growth and think..YES!! but then the old Sadie pops back up and BAM...right where we started...And it kills me to watch the people in her life suffer.  Everett, Mark, Ginny, Cole...these people put up with so much from her.  Which is really one great thing about Body & Blood; instead of solely being told from Sadie's POV, we were able to hear from Everett and Mark.  I thoroughly enjoyed switching in to their heads.  It was also awesome to read how they see and accept Sadie for all her "sadieness".
But, all my Sadie hate aside, I really like this series.  With such a distinctive concept, you fall in to the pages soaking up all that Amanda hands to us about this compelling group of people called The Survivors.  That this world isn't only made up of them but other supernatural beings that will either be with them in their great battle or against them.
I highly recommend that you pick this series up.  For a writer to be able to elicit such strong emotions from me, even one in which I don't like the MC, then that tells you just how gifted she is.  To be able to keep me enthralled, enchanted, dying to know what is going to happen...YEP..I am hooked...
