Title: A COLD LEGACY
Author: Megan Shepherd
Pub. Date: January 27, 2015
Publisher: Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins
Pages: 400

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.

Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.

With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

A COLD LEGACY excerpt
p.21-24

Montgomery stopped the horses outside a tavern. He came to the carriage door, opening it just a crack to keep the rain from drenching us. “I’m going to ask directions. We can’t be far now.”

We watched him saunter over the muddy street as though he didn’t even feel the bite of freezing rain. A face appeared in the tavern window. The door opened and he spoke to a woman in a wool dress for a few moments, then stomped back through the mud. “This village is called Quick,” he told us. “The manor’s only five miles from here.”

“Did you hear that?” Lucy murmured to Edward, still stroking his hair. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. Everything will be all right once we arrive.”

Montgomery’s eyes shifted to me. Neither of us wanted to remind Lucy that the prospect of Edward’s fever breaking—and the Beast’s reappearance—was almost more frightening than the fever itself. Delirious, he was less of a threat.

“Let’s go then,” I whispered to Montgomery. “And quickly.”

He closed the door and in another moment we were moving again, passing through the rest of Quick. Then all too soon the village was nothing but fading lights. The storm grew and the road became rougher, and all the while Edward’s eyes rolled back and forth beneath shuttered lids.

Thunder struck close by, and Lucy shrieked. Montgomery whipped the horses harder, pulling us along the uneven road impossibly fast, trying to outrun the storm. I twisted in the seat to look out the back window at the pelting rain. A stone fence ran alongside us.

“We must be getting close,” I said.

“Not soon enough,” Lucy breathed. “We’re going to crash if he keeps driving like this!”

The road widened, straightening, letting us travel even faster. Lightning struck close by, blinding me. The horses bolted. Lucy screamed and covered her eyes, but I couldn’t tear mine away. The lightning had struck an enormous oak tree, twisted from centuries of wind. The oak took flame, blazing despite the rain. A smoking gash ran down the trunk—the lightning’s death mark. I watched until the rain put out most of the flames, but it still smoldered, billowing hot ash into the night.

The horses pawed the earth, and I grabbed the window to steady myself. At this wild speed, just hitting a single rock at the wrong angle would send the carriage shattering to the ground. It was madness to go so fast. Couldn’t Montgomery calm the horses?

Just when I feared the carriage would careen out of control, it stopped short, throwing me against the opposite wall. I tangled in Lucy’s limbs as the chains around Edward’s body clinked. Balthazar grunted, jerking awake at last. We scrambled in the bottom of the carriage until the door flew open.
Montgomery stood in the pelting rain. I feared he’d say we’d broken another strut or the horses had gone lame or we’d have to spend the night in the harsh storm.

But then I saw the lights behind him, and the night took shape into a turreted stone manor with bright lamps blazing and gargoyles on the roof vomiting rain into a stone courtyard.

Montgomery’s eyes met mine beneath the low brim of his hat.

“We’ve arrived,” he said.

About Megan:

Hello!

I’ve been many things, like a professional exchange student, park ranger in Montana, and LOST enthusiast, but what I am now is a writer.

I think it’s fair to say I was born into it. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised behind the counter of my parents’ independent bookstore, Highland Books in Brevard. Ah, so many free books. But I never thought being a writer could be a real career. After college I thought I’d end up as a foreign service officer somewhere dashing and exotic, like Canada. I studied French, Spanish, German, and Russian and still speak a few of those. Then I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Senegal, where I learned a few more languages I’ll never speak again and lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water. You can probably imagine how that experience went, but if you’re curious, here are the dirty details

It wasn't until a chance aquaintance read something I wrote and said, "have you ever considered being a writer?" that something clicked and I realized it was possible. My husband encouraged me, and I quickly fell head-over-heels in love with writing and children's literature in particular. I started out writing articles, which have appeared in Faces, Appleseeds, and Calliope magazines, and stories for younger children. I soon realized I wasn’t sweet enough to write fiction for that age and found myself writing young adult literature instead, which doesn’t require nearly as many tender moments and includes a lot more cursing.

When I'm not writing, I can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. I love to hear from readers, so please drop me a line!

I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.

Miami Hush Club: Book 2 By Michelle Warren

Excerpt:

“Hello, Nicolette,” Casper says slowly, his voice low and seductive.

The timbre of that voice causes my blood to hum with unwanted delight, and I

wrap my arms tighter around my body, rooting my feet to my spot to secure a safe

distance from him.

Not to be outdone by my presence, Alex instantly treats him as an object that

she owns. It’s a clear message for me to stay away. She gives Casper another

lingering kiss, and they both moan with pleasure as her hands travel down the front

of his pants.

With a forceful grasp, she leads him to her room, tugging him by his dick. She

may think she’s in charge, but it’s him who will dominate when they make it to the

mattress—if they make it that far. I expect her bedroom door to slam shut behind

them, but it doesn’t. Instead, they continue their sexual encounter as if I’m not even

here.

Another message: He’s mine.

Like a voyeur, I step to the door and peer in because it’s always me on the

outside of the glass, looking in at and wanting everything that Alex has. Another

reminder: She gets what she wants when she wants it.

That used to be me too, but now it’s only her.

I’m seething that she’s brought Casper here, outraged that they’re still an item

and she didn’t warn me, and furious that I still care. She’ll protect me from

everything else, but not from Casper. He’s the one person she feels for more than

me. Maybe I’m jealous of that too.

He’s already naked and wrapped in her embrace as I watch him, every hard

angle and curve. His abs. His ass. His cock. Perfection. He licks the slope between

her bare breasts, but he’s watching me. Fucking her, but mindfucking me.

Nothing’s changed.

And though I desperately don’t want to, all I can imagine is his body settled

between my legs, sharp hip bones pressing into my thighs, injecting his soul into

mine, hurting me in the most mindbending and delicious way as I revel in every

second.

I can practically feel it, but it’s not me.

It’s her. Always her.

Always Alex.

I’m sick. So very sick with envy and disgust that the past is replaying before my

eyes again, and I can’t control myself. Anger and lust races through my veins. Alex

and Casper are moaning and rocking with each other now, hanging over the side

of the bed, half supported by the floor as I zone out yet again, transfixed by what’s

happening and I cannot make it stop. She screams with pleasure and grabs his

ass to gain his attention, but he’s still focused on me.

I am a stay at home mom from the South and wife to the most giving and hard working husband ever.  I love to cook and try out new recipes even if they don't always turn out like I want them to.  I refer to my kids lovingly as the Three Stooges as they are constantly coming up with new ways to reek havoc in the house.  Most recently that included putting a rubberband on the kitchen sink sprayer so it would douse me when I did the dishes.  I love to go to roller derby bouts and read in my spare time.  I write mostly at night when the house is silent and I can sneak cookies without having to share!  If you're into stalking, try under the Cypress trees in the swamps of Louisiana, but watch out for gators!!

Lila Felix has done it again...
Her Love and Skate series is totally phenomenal and being able to continue on with the next generation is just AWESOME!!!!
The derby girls are so much fun to read about. They are ever witty and strong.. just the right type of heroine you love to read about...
And then you have the male lead that just makes you go weak in the knees...yes...meet Cyrus Black...
Complete swoon worthy...*sighs heavily*

The Second Jam is a beautiful love story and it gripped my heart from the beginning...and absolutely that feel good read that leaves with a huge amazing smile on your face...
A definite must read!!!

Barnes and Noble coming SOON.

HARDCORE is one of the most effed up stories I've ever read. And it was absolutely beautiful. I loved every moment of it. Those 80 pages gave me everything I crave. It broadened my horizons, fed my imagination, and thrilled me to the core. I found a kindred spirit, a super sexy antihero, and a plot so twisted my sickeningly romantic heart was torn from my chest, stomped on and filleted, stomped again into the greasy pavement and left bleeding out... and I'm dying for more.

I fell hard for both Cory and Van. Each has something that just radiates with me. Cory has such a clear, raw, authentic voice, I couldn't help but immediately connect with her. I felt every thought, every emotion, as if it were my own. I wanted nothing more than for her to walk away from her current life and run off into the sunset with her perfect match. Van is absolutely it. I don't care what happens next. They MUST end up together. This man is perfection. Sex on legs. All that and a bag of chips. Whip cream and extra cherries on top. Oh, yes, he is F.I.N.E.

BUT, as you can guess, things are complicated and it's not gonna get better anytime soon. Slide in, jump up, and hold on. HARDCORE is one helluva ride. Staci Hart doesn't hold back and that's what makes this story so fabulous and fresh. She's officially found her niche. Trust me when I say, HARDCORE will send your adrenaline sky high, have your face flushing, and your ladybits on fire, and your soul thirsting for a HEA. But more than anything, it will leave you begging for MORE.

Stay tuned for Episode 2. In the meantime, add it to your TBR...

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, even though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.

Miami Hush Club: Book 1 By Michelle Warren

Ten years ago

The moment playing out before my eyes is ripe with irony.

My boyfriend is having sex, but not with me. Even though we run a wildly

successful escort service together, I expected Casper to be faithful. What a

lovesick fool I was. Instead, it’s me who’s being fucked as I helplessly watch my

sister and best escort, Alex, sit atop Casper’s dick, enthusiastically riding him into

next week.

At first I’m frozen in shock, so the situation crashing down on me is

momentarily unfathomable. In some ways, it’s a nightmare that makes no sense.

My heart stops, collapsing in my chest and sinking into my gut as I desperately

try to hold myself upright. Or maybe those are my malfunctioning lungs, unable to

inhale the thickness of betrayallaced air. Either way, it’s only my vision that

continues working. My eyes soak up all the information, piecing together fragments

of incomprehensible images as my brain tries to catch up.

Casper and Alex don’t even realize I’m here watching them because they’re

too caught up in screwing to the rhythmic beat of the blaring music that’s making

the condo’s walls vibrate. Still, the music isn’t enough to drown out their escalating

moans of pleasure.

I want to break out of this hell but I’m mesmerized, watching his hands grip the

curve of her hips, his fingertips sinking into her soft flesh, and his muscular arms

flexing as they lift her body effortlessly, controlling the speed of their wild and

ferocious coupling. Rising up, he takes her breast in his mouth and then drags his

tongue along her collarbone, right before their lips connect feverishly.

It’s at that moment that I realize that this is more than a mindless fuck session,

because Alex never kisses her clients. Ever.

They’re together.

At this new understanding, my gut roils as my brain kicks in and attempts to

process this. How long has this been going on? Why would the two people I love

most do this to me?

But the need for answers is quickly overcome by the surge of intense fury

shooting back to my heart, delivering a jolt of electricity, jumpstarting it in erratic

beats. Now it’s exploding with a dangerous concoction of emotions—rejection,

sadness, doubt.

And anger. Lots and lots of anger.

As if my body can’t take the boiling volatile mixture, my hands begin to shake,

my muscles convulse, and finally I erupt, releasing a strangled scream.

EXCERPT for The Prince by Sylvain Reynard RELEASES 1/20/15

The unveiling of a set of priceless illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy at the Uffizi Gallery exposes the unsuspecting Professor Gabriel Emerson and his beloved wife, Julianne, to a mysterious and dangerous enemy.

Unbeknownst to the Professor, the illustrations he secretly acquired years ago were stolen a century earlier from the ruler of Florence’s underworld. Now one of the most dangerous beings in Italy is determined to reclaim his prized artwork and exact revenge on the Emersons, but not before he uncovers something disturbing about Julianne …

Set in the city of Florence, “The Prince” is a prequel novella to “The Raven,” which is the first book in the new Florentine Series Trilogy by Sylvain Reynard.

“The Prince” can be read as a standalone but readers of The Gabriel Series may be curious about the connection between The Professor’s world and the dark, secret underworld of “The Prince.”

Excerpt from THE PRINCE by Sylvain Reynard on sale 1/20/15

In the distance, the Prince could hear voices and muffled sounds.

He approached silently, almost floating across the floor.
Desperate groans and the rustling of fabric filled his ears, along with the twin sounds of rapidly beating hearts. He could smell their scents, the aromas heightened due to their sexual arousal.
He growled in reaction.
The corridor was shrouded in darkness but the Prince could see that the professor had his wife up against a window between two statues, her legs wrapped around his waist.
Her voice was breathy as she spoke, but the Prince tuned out her words, moving closer so he could catch a glimpse of her lovely face.
At the sight of it, flushed with passion, his old heart quickened and he felt the stirrings of arousal.
It was not his custom to observe rather than participate. But on this occasion, he decided to make an exception. Careful to remain in the darkness, he moved to the wall opposite the couple.
The woman squirmed in her lover’s arms, her high heels catching on his tuxedo jacket. Her fingers flew to his neck, undoing his bow tie and tossing it carelessly to the floor.
She unbuttoned his shirt, and her mouth moved to his chest, as murmurs of pleasure escaped his lips.
The Prince felt more than desire as he watched the woman’s eager movements. He caught a glimpse of her exquisite mouth and the toss of her long hair that would no doubt feel like silk between his fingers.
She lifted her head to smile at the man who held her close and he could see love in her eyes.

Absolutely brilliant!! Eloquent and breath-taking Piquing my desires for more!!
While this novella bridges the Gabriel's Inferno series with Sylvain's new series..I was excited to see Gabriel and Julia again.. The novella brings us to a time that we have visited with them yet we meet new characters and new storyline that will bring in the new series..
Creative and intriguing.. I couldn't put it down eager to discover all I could about The Prince..
But alas.. The novella ended and I'm left here drooling and wanting more and more..
I seriously cannot wait for THE RAVEN!!!
