How far would you go for love?

Since losing her parents at 14, young prodigy Dr. Lydia Ashley has focused on one thing: an appointment on the Deep Water Research Command Endure. Now 21, she’s about to realize that dream, but nothing is how she imagined it would be. Her transitional sponsor forgets her, her new lab is in complete chaos, and, as if that weren’t enough, she’s about to discover something so horrific it could potentially destroy all life on the planet.

Daniel Brewer, a noted playboy and genius in his own right, may be exactly what she needs… Or he may make everything worse.

Has she finally found a puzzle she can’t solve?

Plight of the Sci-Fi Romance Author

Want to know a secret?

Right now, I’m kind of terrified of my own book.

It’s not that I don’t love the story, or the setting, or the characters. Nothing like that.

No, what has me gripping the armrest of my office chair is thinking about my genre. Maven is Science Fiction Romance. It’s a niche market. Readers who love sci-fi may have that “eww, romance” reaction. Readers of romance may have that “eww, science” reaction. It terrifies me that people will see “Sci-Fi Romance” and automatically discount it for one reason or the other. Because, really, who writes a book intending for it to flop?

When I set out to write this story, I was barely aware Sci-Fi Romance was a thing. I just wrote what the story demanded to be. I loved the underwater setting. I loved my characters. I love the way the plot evolved into something so much more complex than I imagined when I started chapter 1. Funny thing is that I still feel like a sub-niche when I look at Sci-Fi Romance as a genre. It’s filled with space operas and alien encounters (there is more to the genre, but that’s a different post altogether). My story has none of that. It isn’t the hard science fiction I occasionally read as a youngster. It’s told in a very contemporary voice, a far cry from futuristic slang and smatterings of alien languages. It’s accessible to anyone who enjoys a good story.

But I’m afraid of this book. I’m afraid people won’t give it a chance because “eww, science” or “eww, romance”. I think people will like it regardless of either factor, but now my challenge is to convince readers of that. Think about trying to tell someone who’s never seen chocolate about how awesome it is. It’s brown. It can get melty and messy. On the surface it doesn’t look like something you should be eating. If it’s a thing they’ve never tried before, how do you talk them into that first taste? Now, I’m not saying Maven is on par with chocolate, because, really, what is? But maybe you can see the dilemma I’m facing.

Will readers respond to Maven? Will they take that first tentative bite? Well, those aren’t questions I can answer. All I can do is tell them how much I love it and offer to share. If I’m lucky, maybe they’ll agree.

Starla Huchton released her first novel, The Dreamer's Thread, as a full cast podcast production beginning in August 2009. Her first foray went on to become a double-nominee and finalist for the 2010 Parsec Awards. Since her debut, Starla's voice has appeared in other podcasts including The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine, The Drabblecast, and Erotica a la Carte. She is also a voice talent for Darkfire Productions, and narrates several of their projects, including The Emperor's Edge series, This Path We Share, and others. Her writing has appeared in the Erotica a la Carte podcast, a short story for The Gearheart (earning her a third Parsec nomination), and an episode of the Tales from the Archives podcast (the companion to Tee Morris and Philippa Balantine's Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series), which garnered her a second finalist badge from the 2012 Parsec Awards. Her second novel, a Steampunk adventure entitled Master of Myth, was the first place winner in the Fantasy/Science Fiction category of The Sandy Writing Contest held annually by the Crested Butte Writers Conference. Maven is her third completed novel and the first in a planned series of four, being released under the name S. A. Huchton.

After completing her degree in Graphic Arts, Starla opened up shop as a freelance graphic designer focusing on creating beautiful book covers for independent authors and publishers. She currently lives in Virginia where she trains her three Minions and military husband.

What an incredible story. And an amazing debut. Written with intelligence, moving sensuality and sass, MAVEN was an excellent adventure.
I love science fiction and fantasy. I'm pretty sure that started with The Hobbit and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I also love and am terrified of the water so this was a journey I was looking forward to taking- safe in my cozy reading space... It's been awhile since I've read something considered strictly scifi, but MAVEN is truly so much more.  A young female prodigy aboard a submarine in the year 2040? Mystery-intrigue, the possibility of romance... Not a storyline I've seen before and I was eager to see where Starla would take it.

I instantly liked Lydia and found her unusual life fascinating. A tragic history, out of the ordinary and spectacular accomplishments, and a heart filled with hope and promise. The story is told from her perspective and from the beginning I was hooked. We meet Dr. Lydia Ashley as she approaches her assignment on the DWRC Endure. Right away we see her intelligence and enthusiasm, and I got caught up in her arrival as much as she did. Of course things don't go as smoothly as she hoped, especially when she meets Daniel Brewer. Her long distance crush of six years is somewhat of a letdown and she questions her decision to work alongside him under his father's command.

Daniel is... well, like Lydia, he's more than meets the eye. And also like Lydia, he's seen tragedy in his young life. He's resentful of his past, his father and his position. He's not a happy person and has earned himself quite a reputation. And of course he's gorgeous. When he finally makes his appearance, he's so struck by Lydia he's not sure how to handle it. His first impression may have ruined his chance with the beguiling young beauty.

So, is this the beginning of a great romance or a recipe for disaster? Well, our crew mates don't have a lot of time to explore electricity between them as Lydia uncovers some disturbing tests being run in her lab and an investigation is begun with Lydia and Daniel at the helm. Time is against them- and possibly some of their crew. They've no idea who to trust or whether they can unravel the truth before life as they know it is destroyed.

This story has it all; mystery, suspense, ah, yes, ROMANCE and some action. It's fast paced and enthralling. The relationships between Lydia, Daniel and the crew grow throughout the story and as secrets and betrayals are discovered. With the dual storyline of the investigation and Lydia and Daniel's bumpy romance, there is never a dull moment and I delighted in actually learning a thing or two. While MAVEN is largely a work of fiction, Starla has put a lot of her own experience and a ton of research into making this an exciting and believable adventure. She exceeded my expectations, challenged my mind, and won my heart.

All in all, a sparkling debut, and a series I'm guaranteed to follow with rapt enthusiasm. MAVEN is a story that crosses genres, makes you think- and dream, and I highly recommend it to EVERYONE. Five BLAZING flames!

BLOG TOUR: Precipice by Kevin J Howard

The End is only the Beginning....
It wasn't the first time Lieutenant Travis Daniels had been far from his wife and son. Leading an elite team on countless missions, dodging death at every turn-it was what he was trained to do. And returning to his family was always his driving force... but this time might be different. Imprisoned for an unsanctioned intrusion into a hot zone, Travis and his elite team took a deal to assist in the colonization of Mars to evade the death penalty. While stationed there, Travis' only source of sanity were the brief video conversations he was allowed with his family. When the last transmission received showed choppy images of the city in darkness and blurs of humanoid creatures running through the streets, Travis and his team must decide to either stay on Mars or find a way back to his family-unknowing of the hell that Earth has become.

Annie followed Mr. Sharp through the door to their left, passing an office with a very large man sitting behind the desk eating donuts. He briefly looked up as they passed, his mouth caked with powdered sugar. Annie smiled and continued on, feeling anxious as they passed a door with Room One written across the front. Mr. Sharp paused before the door on their right, this one being the third room. He opened the door and stepped back, allowing them entrance.

“Now the link has been established and your husband is waiting on his end. Just press the green button there and you’re good to go. Please remember that there is a three to five second delay.”

                  “We will, thank you.”

Mr. Sharp nodded and shut the door. Annie felt a bit uncomfortable around him. She could feel his eyes watching her the entire time he’d led them down the hall, picturing what her ass might look like in a black thong. Licking his lips like a predator. Annie shook her head, not wanting to give that prick another moment of her time. She took a seat before the monitor and lifted Logan up on her lap, her skin breaking out in bumps from excitement. She bounced Logie on her knee as the screen went from black to blue, an hourglass turning slowly in the screens center. Annie became overwhelmed with emotion as her husband’s face appeared. They both began to cry. Unable to contain the flow of tears as she looked at the man she loved.

“You need to shave,” Annie laughed.

“I’ll have to get around to it,” Daniels said after a three second pause. He wiped the tears from his eyes and looked at his son. “You have gotten so big.”

“Hi daddy,” Logan said cheerfully, waving with excitement. “Look, I have a new robot!” Logan held up the little toy his mother had gotten him, waving it back and forth.

“That is an awesome robot, Logie.” Travis took a deep breath and held it, feeling a fresh batch of tears forming. “Are you being a good boy for your mother?”

“Yes, daddy,” Logan said sweetly, looking down as he felt shy.

                  “Do you miss your daddy?”

“I miss you daddy,” Logan said, smiling.

“I miss you too, every day sweetheart.” Travis turned away from the screen and talked to someone out of view, nodding with disappointment. “I love you Logie, but I need to talk to mommy for a minute.”

                  “Okay daddy, I love you.”

Travis kissed his hand and touched the screen, unable to hold back the tears. Logie touched the screen and pressed his small hand to his father’s large hand. Annie helped Logan off the chair and led him out into the hallway and into the room across from them, set up as a little daycare with toys and videos. Knowing her time was incredibly short, she turned on a video and smiled at the young woman in charge of watching her son before hurrying back across the hall.

“He’s getting so much older.” Travis shook his head. “I’m so sorry you have to raise our son all alone.”

“I know.” She touched the screen and caressed the image of her husband’s face. The feel was of cold glass, not that of the rough texture of her husband’s face, his skin always carrying a five o’clock shadow. She’d gotten on his case so many times over the years to keep up his grooming, telling him his face felt like sandpaper. At this moment she’d take his rough cheeks in a heartbeat. To feel the warmth of his breath running over the back of her neck. “How are you carrying on?”

“It’s so very different here.” Travis looked about his surroundings. He himself was in a telecommunications booth, similar to the one his wife was in, only his room was dark and cold. Unlike her room, his would not lead to a hallway that ended in a sunny day. “It’s always so dark here. So very cold.”

“The nights have grown so cold here as well. Without you…” Annie shook her head, angry with herself. She’d given a little pep talk in the mirror before she’d come out, telling herself not to waste any precious time discussing things that might upset her husband. No point making him feel worse than he already did.

“That’s something I’ve been wanting to talk to you about.” Travis leaned back and scratched his head, a nervous tick he’d had as far back as she’d known him. “I know this has not been easy for you and Logie. I bet it’s been hell. So I know how hard it can be to keep things together while being on your own. I just…I want you to know…” Travis cleared his throat, finding it difficult to continue. “If you need help raising our son, I want you to know that I won’t hold it against you.” Travis took a deep breath, holding back the tears to make his request clear and direct. “My only wish is that you find someone that is kindhearted and good with Logan.”

“Are you giving me permission to date?” Annie shook her head.

“I know how lonely you are.”

                  “And you’re not?”

                  “Please, this isn’t…”

“Stop,” Annie interrupted, holding out her hands. “I know what you’re trying to do, but it’s not going to happen. It is incredibly difficult to raise a small child on your own, to shield them from the negative criticism they get for having a father sentenced to life of hard labor. But you and I are husband and wife, for better or worse. You’re my husband, the father of my only son. And I will not find some temporary replacement just because the nights are a little rough.”

“I love you so much.” Travis touched the screen.

“I love you too,” Annie said, pressing her hand to his. Her attention was called up to a red blinking light in the corner of the screen. “They’re giving us the two minute countdown. I can’t believe it’s over so quickly.”

“Can I say goodbye to Logie real quick?”

Annie stood from her chair and opened the door, rushing across the hall to grab her son’s hand and take him from the nursery.

“Hi daddy.” Logie held up his red robot and waved it back and forth. “I have blanky with me.”

“I know. You’re turning into such a big boy.” Daniels leaned close and smiled. “I want you to listen to your mother and help her out with whatever she needs. Can you do that for me?”

                  “Sure daddy.”

“I love you both so much.”

Her husband’s face disappeared and the screen had gone black, broken by the words “Transmission Severed” in the screen’s center. Annie shook her head, agitated she hadn’t been given the chance to say goodbye. Machines weren’t known for their compassion. Annie looked to her son and smiled, gripping his chin while shaking his head slightly.

“You were a good boy for daddy.” Annie ran a hand through his hair.

BLOG TOUR: A Matter of Heart by Heather Lyons

Thank you everyone for stopping by today and joining us on this fantastic tour with Heather Lyon's book A Matter of Heart; book 2 in the Fate series.
First, want to say many thanks to Heather Lyons, InkSlinger PR, and Kelly Simmon for everything you guys do from writing a fabulous book to promoting it!! You guys rock...
Now, what everyone has been waiting for...
A Matter of Heart....

No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals' city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she's joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she's happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she's finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.
After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what's she's capable of as a Creator. And then there's the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah's twin brother and Chloe's ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another.
But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

A MATTER OF HEART is book 2 in the Fate Series, a mature Young Adult/New Adult fantasy.

10 Things You Don’t Know About Chloe Lilywhite

1.     Even though Jonah teases her mercilessly for this, her favorite singer is Taylor Swift. Her current favorite Swifty song? Sad Beautiful Tragic. It changes frequently based on what she’s in the mood for, though.

2.     When she sees a dress she really likes while browsing online, she’ll sometimes cheat and make herself one, despite her mother telling her over the years that doing so is a waste of her craft.

3.     Her favorite color is blue, specifically cerulean. She loves to wear this color of nail polish on her toes.

4.     Her favorite movie is Run Lola Run—Kellan introduced her to it, and since then, she’s watched it probably a dozen times. She’s got a thing for foreign films.

5.     Chloe’s a horrible singer, but that doesn’t stop her from singing loudly and often, much to the amusement of her friends—in the shower, in the car, walking around Annar while wearing headphones . . .

6.     Despite the Council’s band on the creation of new living beings without assembly approval, Chloe often wishes she could create unicorns. Since she’s denied those, her favorite animal is a narwhal.

7.     She’s a hot chocolate snob—you won’t ever catch her drinking the kind made with water. Her favorite cup comes from Karl, who eventually taught Jonah how to make it for her. It’s made with three different kinds of chocolates that she ensures she has in her cupboards at all times, since it’s one of her comfort foods.

8.     Her car in California was a Mini Cooper. It’s currently in storage while she lives in Annar.

9.     One of her hidden talents is beat boxing. Chloe, Cora, and Lizzie formed a short-lived band when they were in middle school, and rather play the drums (which she sucked at), she taught herself to beat box instead. She’s actually pretty good at it.

10. Other than a single ring, Chloe rarely wears jewelry. She didn’t even get her ears pierced until she was a sophomore in high school, and only then to piss her mom off.

Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.

WOW!! I just read A Matter of Fate, book 1, and A Matter of Heart back to back.  Boy, does it send you on a rollercoaster of turmoil.  It tore me up!! *sighs*
Ok..ok...let me get focused and tell you about A Matter of Heart.
The Fate series so far is fantastic.  Heather Lyons created a unique, intriguing world that you immediately feel drawn to.  Introducing the readers to Magicals, individuals that possess gifts/talents that will be their job after their ascension.  I mean, you have people that are Earth Movers, people who control the tides, the weather, plants...you name it...there is a Magical with that talent.  Then there are some more rare.  You have Emotionals...I think you can figure their ability out...and then Intellectuals, Shamans, and our special girl Chloe...a Creator.
Only one Creator at a time sits on the council and as Chloe turns 18 and ascends, she finds herself loaded with responsibility.
The premise of world is amazing. I was glued to the pages soaking up how everything worked, the dynamics of it all.  Learning their history and seeing where things may be going.  Heather Lyons did a FANTASTIC job developing a story that brings you in to the events happening, twist you up, and then try and set you down with sort of dignity.
And I laugh, because, I was screaming and mad at a lot of things that happened in this book.  Book 1 got me started on this emotional tornado and UGH, book 2 did the exact same thing.  I wanted to slap Chloe so many times.  I thought the love triangle from book one was settled at the end....and I was very happy with how it ended.  But no...NOOOOO....things couldn't just die down.
I am not going to lie. It is very hard for me to read about soul mates caught up in love triangles.  Even when two of the three are twin brothers AND they both share a connection to Chloe.  I do understand her dilemma...but doesn't it stand to reason that since she shares a STRONGER connection to Jonah that it would fizzle out Kellan's?  It's not that Kellan is a bad guy...quite the contrary...both guys are fabulous...I am really just ready to say...Have them both...Why choose??
But I made a choice....Chloe made a choice in book 1...and her decision had very valid and strong points...But...we shall see how it all turns out...
I also think that Chloe should just say...To hell with love...I am going to be me and do whatever the hell I WANT!!! She's young and only time will tell how she grows...
A Matter of Heart is exactly what its name says...it deals heavily in the emotions of Chloe.  Wrapped up in all she is dealing with...your heart struggles right along with hers...even when I get so pissed at her for the stupid decisions she makes.
I can't wait for book 3.....GAH!!!! book 2 left me dying for sooooooo much more....

EXCERPT

Turning in his arms to face him, I took in his softly sleeping face. His mouth was slightly open and his long dark lashes relaxed against his high cheekbones. Running a finger down the side of his face earned me a deep husky moan. It was the sexiest thing I’d ever heard. His facial hair felt like warm velvet against my cheek as I leaned in and pressed a tiny kiss on the corner of his mouth.

I backed away, expecting to continue to watch him sleep, but he followed me up with his eyes still closed and started to kiss me. Again he moaned when I allowed him access and he slipped his tongue into my mouth. Flipping me onto my back, his naked body covered mine. The white sheet tangled around our bodies as he pressed himself to mine.

His hand worked its way up my side brushing against my breast and I released a tiny sound into his mouth. His hand continued its journey until he rested it against the side of my neck. Tattooed fingers dug into the hairs on the back of my neck as he invaded my mouth with Zeke sweetness.

Pulling away, he gazed down at me with sleepy eyes and a lazy grin.

“You woke us up.” His voice was rough with sleep.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, “Us?”

Looking down between our bodies, he looked back up at me with a smile as he pressed his hips into mine. Hard heat that pushed into my thigh and I lifted my hips for more. He smiled down at me and shifted the hair out of his eyes.

“Yes… us. I’m okay in the morning, but the prick downstairs will take a jab at you if you wake him up.
