The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

Born in Sacramento, CA, Julie Kagawa moved to Hawaii at the age of nine. There she learned many things: how to bodyboard, that teachers scream when you put centipedes in their desks and that writing stories in math class is a fantastic way to kill time. Her teachers were glad to see her graduate. Julie now lives in Louisville, KY, with her husband and a plethora of pets. She still laughs whenever she sees a centipede.

Oh, Ethan Chase. We all loved him as Meghan's ever so sweet and loving little brother with the Sight. Well, he's not so little- or sweet anymore. But he sure is awesome! He's all grown up, still haunted by the fae, and missing his sister terribly. But he's also cynical and always in trouble. He blames Meghan for his pathetic and tortured existence, for deserting their family to be with her Knight. And despite his best efforts to avoid the fair folk, he finds himself- once again, in the middle of a Faeryland nightmare. With uncanny precision and her trademark wit, Julie slowly unveils to Ethan- and the reader, what's been hidden from him all these long years without his sister by his side. But what he discovers about his family is the least of his worries. A force he's never seen or heard of before has arrived in town. And let me tell you-it's creepy! When he tries to help a half-breed friend, Ethan is all at once running from and in pursuit of this unknown threat. Ethan, being smart and strong- and pretty wicked with knives- isn't about to stand down against this new foe. Not by a long shot. And he's certainly not going it alone. Believing he's short on allies, and knowing you can never truly trust a faery, he's forced to make fast alliances and hope they all survive. This tale is nothing short of brilliant! From Louisiana to the Wyldwood and all places in between, Ethan's first real tale is chock full of action, surprises, a bit of fae fun and a sweet spark of romance. The perfect addition to The Iron Fey saga, The Lost Prince weaves past, present and future seamlessly. Bringing back some old favorites, introducing some new heroes as well as delightful- and disturbing side characters, Julie takes us on a frightening adventure with Ethan- The Lost Prince. TLP promises to make this spinoff series every bit as thrilling and enchanting as The Iron Fey. I was captivated the whole way through. I loved the action, the characters, their interactions and most of all I loved the surprises. Iron Fae fans will not be disappointed. And I can't wait to see what happens next.
Yep, Ethan's a big boy now...better, badder... and ready to knock your socks off while he kicks some serious fae ass. BRING IT!

ARC from Netgalley
I first want to say that I love the Iron Fey...When I began with the first book, The Iron King, many moons ago, it has been one that I have followed religiously!!  With that said, I have been on pins and needles knowing that my love for Meghan and Ash would be coming to an end and now introduced or should I say re-introduced to none other that Meghan's brother Ethan Chase.
The Lost Prince started out very different for me and I was starting to get a little nervous because where I was so used to the world in which we followed Meghan in, Ethan's was so much harsher, filled with anger and hostility.  But, as time went on and I found my foothold in to Ethan's character, I was then completely wrapped up again in the world of Fey that Julie had won me over with before.
As always, we are whisked away in to the mystical world of the fey and from Ethan's POV, this is not a good thing.  Trying his hardest to stay away from Them is pretty much his number one goal day in and day out.  With a troubled past, we start this new tale with Ethan starting a new school.  With hopes to stay under the radar, he tries his hardest to be the bad boy, the one that everyone should run away from the minute he walks in the room. Only thing is, fundamentally, Ethan isn't a bad guy.  No matter how hard he tries, he goes against that image and helps out a half-breed getting beat up on...AND this is where the story finally takes a turn in to the action packed suspense known as the world of the Iron Fey...
In this tale, Ethan meets a wonderful, charming young classmate named Kenzie.  She completely sees through him and calls him on all his "broody" antics.  Not to mention, but Kenzie also found a way to crawl in to Ethan's heart.
With a new threat on the horizon, we are back in the NeverNever where we head to the Iron Kingdom.  I enjoyed the brief encounter with our beloved Iron Queen and Iron Knight...but the interesting one is the new character named Kierran.  Who is he, you say??  I will let you read the book to find out, but let me say this...he is a dynamic character in which I can't wait to find out more about him.
So, overall...The Lost Prince captured me and left me wanting soooo much more.  With a suspenseful, action-packed, storyline that grabs you from the moment you read the first line and holds you tightly til the very end....filled with new romances, whimsical and dark creatures, and a lore that has you believing in faeries all the while...The Lost Prince is a MUST READ for your 2012 reading list!!

BLOG TOUR: Witch Born by Amber Argyle

Brusenna thought it was finished.

She defeated the Dark Witch, saving the Haven Witches from imprisonment and death. She found love and a place to belong.

She was wrong.

Haven is not the sanctuary it appears to be. Even love is in danger of slipping away like water through cupped hands.

Some things can't be saved.

A new threat merges with the old as the Witches’ dark history begins to catch up with them. Only Brusenna knows the extent of the danger and how to stop it, though doing so might cost her everything.

Including her life.

Will Brusenna be required to make the ultimate sacrifice?

“Joshen’s arms tightened around her. Senna wet her lips. Dare she tell him the next part? “Something’s happening to me, Joshen. It’s not just that my song’s getting stronger. My senses are, too. I truly hear the pain of the Four Sisters in Tarten. It haunts me.”
With the tip of his thumb, he traced the tattoo on her stomach—his touch unerringly accurate. “What can I do to make it better?”
By the Creators, she’d missed the smell of him—horses and the sea. “Make me forget, for just a little while.”
He tipped her chin up and kissed her. He was always soft and gentle, but today she felt an undeniable hunger somewhere deep inside him. He was trying to suppress it. But she didn’t want that. She wanted him to banish the lingering foulness of the curse and the fear that had never released her from its sweaty grasp, replacing all of that with the sweet taste of his mouth.
Gripping fistfuls of his dark hair, she pulled him down and deepened the kiss. His lips crushed against hers, Joshen responded, kissing her like he’d never kissed her before. The stubble along his jaw was rough against her chin. She felt herself melting, going soft inside.
Breathless, she pulled away before things grew more heated. “Mother will call out the Heads if I’m not home for supper.”

Amber Argyle grew up with three brothers on a cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains. She spent hours riding horses, roaming the mountains, and playing in her family’s creepy barn. This environment fueled her imagination for writing high fantasy.
She has worked as a short order cook, janitor, and staff member in a mental institution. All of which has given her great insight into the human condition and has made for some unique characters.
She received her bachelor’s degree in English and Physical.

Before we get started with my review, I have a couple of special thank yous to disperse: To Jean Vallesteros for having us as part of Amber's Witch Born tour, and of course to Amber Argyle, for providing me with this enchanting story to share with all of you.

I thoroughly enjoyed Witch Song, which is the first book in the Witch Song series. I thought Amber's world building was wonderful and painted a clear picture in my mind where I was being taken, the characters captivating, the storyline strong, and Amber's version of magic unique. Set in an old world where people travel by horse and sailing ships, shop in street markets, and most of all fear and despise witches. Though the magic here is not your typical hocus-pocus, it's nonetheless powerful and ever-changing.
The writing is melodic and easy to lose yourself in. The story itself is about faith, trust and finding one's true calling. It's not an easy story, our heroine endures pain and suffering, plenty of loss and heartache, and has to make gut wrenching and not just life changing decisions, but those that could change the entire world- the fate of earth. The romance is sweet- the kind you can't get enough of. A slow and steady burn. Fresh, bright, new, and confusing. I devoured every word and couldn't wait to begin Witch Born.
So I'm here soaking it all in. Reveling in the beauty of it, in awe of Amber's creativity and her ability to weave life lessons into such a fantastical tale, and hoping I can do this story some level of justice.
Witch Born begins where Witch Song left off. Senna is alone, some months after a Witch War, disconcerted and unsure of what will come next. I won't go into what happens in the story, I want you to discover it all for yourself. It's a difficult and beautiful tale.
Senna had to grow up quickly in the previous book. And she proved to be amazing. She, Joshen, and her witches went through and overcame so much, and yet it was nothing compared to what they endure in this installment.
I was again immersed in the lyrical  rhythm of the story. I briefly mentioned world building. So, I have to revert back and explain to you why this, for me, is a big part of what makes this story so special. It's simply perfection. It's based on seventeenth century England, and reflects the events of the Salem Witch Trials, but Amber makes it all her own. She created an entire world: earth; water; and sky. Across many lands and beyond. Complete and fully realized civilizations that reach across continents, and mirror our very nature. The many encounters and relationships are complicated and diverse. There are messages hidden not so subtly within these lyrical passages. Lessons in humanity. It shows us how, even when given the knowledge and tools to create real change, we, as a whole, often ignore what has been presented to us and allow history to repeat itself.
What Senna learns is the power of her Song. The strength within. And to never give up on her beliefs.
This is a story full of colorful and clever people, amazing creatures and places we only see in our dreams.
A story any lover of witch tales would enjoy. The perfect blend of magic, mystery, suspense and adventure.
I recommend it anyone and everyone looking for a different take on the world of magic and witches. I'm confident you'll become as enthralled-perhaps even bespelled.

Kathryn's Review of Dear Teen Me
I first want to say a thank you to Zest Books for providing us with an ARC of Dear Teen Me.
Now, on to the book itself.  I have to begin by saying that I loved this book.  What a great idea to put together some fabulous authors and have them write letters to their teen selves.  Going through each letter and hearing advice that they would give to themselves in situations that they experienced as a teen was very enlightening.  I know for myself, that if I could go back in time and find my teen self, I too would have advised myself on several different occasions.  Not all were bad, but there are things that if I would have known what I knew now, it would have saved me a lot of worry, heartache, confusion, etc.
Yes, I know that we have to experience those particular events to become the individuals that we are today, but knowing that I could have found some solace in a book like this, with advice on real life teen situations, could have given me some comfort during those difficult years.
One of my favorite authors, Cynthia Leitich Smith, made a great point in her letter-- "It's a small miracle.  If she can change, then you will, too.  No more hiding.  You go downstairs to confront the boy.  To ask what went wrong.  Years later, you won't care enough to remember what he said.  In the end, that won't be the conversation that mattered."
So, I highly recommend this book.  It has some great humor, some moments of sadness, moments of sweetness, and just overall feelings of understanding.  You should definitely go ahead and pre-order this one...

Shelley's Review of Dear Teen Me
What can I say about Dear Teen Me? Well, first off...where the hell was this book when I was a teen? Oh right! A few of the authors were going through their "things" at the very same time-  and some weren't even born yet. ;)
Nonetheless, I really could've used a book like this back then. I found it helpful even now.
I think it's really important kids understand they are not alone- in any given situation. Someone else is going through whatever it is you're going through- or has. You really can learn from other people's experiences and mistakes. You always have choices.
And most importantly...YOU can always make a change.
Why did I like Dear Teen Me?
For several reasons. 1. It gives teens hope. 2. You get to see where people you love and admire came from- and OUT OF. 3. It's filled with excellent advice. 4. It can help you understand and relate to other teens. You might be able to help someone else out. Maybe even save a life.
5. It's a wonderfully format, laced with humor, fun graphics, quizzes and pictures of your favorite authors from their teens years. (We ALL had bad hair. I'm just sayin. ;)
This was a tear-jerker. From beginning to end. While none of the situations exactly mirrored mine, the feelings they provoked from the authors were much the same....INSECURITY. LOST. ALONE. SCARED. INTROVERTED. RIDICULED. UGLY. AN OUTCAST. A NOBODY. These are feelings most... if not all, kids feel at one time or another. Many throughout their young years. It does help to know others have been where you are and not only survived, but THRIVED.
Though there are SO many I could choose, here are a couple of quotes that really stood out to me:
"..as soon as you stop being quiet, as soon as you stop hiding, and hiding who you are, things will change." ~ Keeping Quiet, Mariko Tamaki
"Nevertheless, it's going to be awhile...Before you understand that you were there that day, you were one of the players, but the story wasn't about you at all."~ This Is Not Your Story,Saundra Mitchell
And my favorite:
"Please don't worry. You worry enough as it is. All these seemingly wrong turns are actually leading you in the right direction. All those things you want to achieve are just ahead of you, so don't you dare stop reaching for them. They're closer than you realize, and if you stop, if you give up and give in, then all that struggle will have been wasted." ~  9 Things You Need To Know, Robin Benway
So... without getting into what I endured, and what I put myself through, here's what I would write in my own letter:
You were never really alone. You were and are talented... in many ways. YOU ARE LOVED. Don't let anyone or anything discourage you or stomp on your dreams...they are within your grasp- if you'd only reach out.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. That one simple thing could've have changed your whole life.
You are worthy; of love, friendship, success and happiness. You, and you alone, hold the key to your future.
NEVER. GIVE. UP.
And lastly, to YOU, the reader: GO. RUN. GET. THIS. BOOK...for your teen, for a friend, for your neighbor's kid, for someone you know who might benefit, but would never ask for anything, for...yourself.
Dear Teen Me is a MUST READ for EVERYONE! It can change lives, and I can't recommend it enough.

We both give Dear Teen Me:

Beta
by Rachel Cohn

Elysia is created in a laboratory, born as a sixteen-year-old girl, an empty vessel with no life experience to draw from. She is a Beta, an experimental model of a teenage clone. She was replicated from another teenage girl, who had to die in order for Elysia to exist.
Elysia's purpose is to serve the inhabitants of Demesne, an island paradise for the wealthiest people on earth. Everything about Demesne is bioengineered for perfection. Even the air induces a strange, euphoric high, which only the island's workers--soulless clones like Elysia--are immune to.
At first, Elysia's life is idyllic and pampered. But she soon sees that Demesne's human residents, who should want for nothing, yearn. But for what, exactly? She also comes to realize that beneath the island's flawless exterior, there is an under-current of discontent among Demesne's worker clones. She knows she is soulless and cannot feel and should not care--so why are overpowering sensations cloud-ing Elysia's mind?
If anyone discovers that Elysia isn't the unfeeling clone she must pretend to be, she will suffer a fate too terrible to imagine. When her one chance at happi-ness is ripped away with breathtaking cruelty, emotions she's always had but never understood are unleashed. As rage, terror, and desire threaten to overwhelm her, Elysia must find the will to survive.
The first in a dazzlingly original science fiction series from best-selling author Rachel Cohn, "Beta "is a haunting, unforgettable story of courage and love in a cor-rupted world.
